Few years before the concept of an electric bus was considered as a toy. Now it is true at Newtown, Kolkata. The new town is a newly constructed urban village. It’s greenery and pollution free environment attracts peoples. To make this sustainable HIDCO and Coal India jointly started the pilot project with three white-green electric buses.
The 32-seater AC buses have been operating on three routes since the starting of this month. It is covering 49 bus stops and providing last-mile in New Town that doesn’t have any buses plying in front of them.
The Skyline Pro-E buses, built by Eicher. electrical equipment supplied by global technology firm KPIT to run on electricity.
The buses are powered by six electric motors – four placed at the rear to drive the rear wheels using a propeller shaft and differential box and two placed in front.
Power is carried to the rear wheels through an automatic gearbox that has two forward gears and one reverse gear.
The buses can run for around 177km on a single charge with the air-conditioning unit switched on throughout, a KPIT official said. In the real situation, it is about 140 km.
KOLKATA needs more this type of green vehicle to solve the pollution problem. Also, we have to create the non-conventional source of energy.
